Why is Accreditation Important?

Read what people are saying: Read the excerpt from the August 2014 SDMS News Wave newsletter on the Ohio State University's CAAHEP-accredited diagnostic medical sonography program on the benefits of being CAAHEP accredited.
"The accreditation process allowed me as the program director to evaluate the program comprehensively. Without the self study process I don't think one could evaluate their program in this manner. It helped me clearly identify strengths and weaknesses. I know which areas to focus on in order to make improvements. The students are now eligible to apply for their national registry. You dont realize it at first but this process is invaluable to a sonography program. I'm so glad I had this opportunity and experience." - Casey Davis, RDMS, RVT, Sonography Program Coordinator, Angelina College, Lufkin, TX
"Being a CAAHEP accredited program is essential for our program. CAAHEP ensures that the program meets the guidelines required to effectively ensure that students are receiving a proper education to prepare them for the workforce and to become Certified Surgical Technologists. The college and the program value the guidance that is provided by CAAHEP."  - Rebecca Lawson, CST, AAS, BA, Program Director of Surgical Technology, Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College
"Students who graduate from our program are automatically qualified to sit for the AAMA exam and become CMAs.  Because we are a CAAHEP accredited program, we are constantly seeking to improve and enhance our program in order to stay in compliance with the high standards set by CAAHEP. Employers in our community know we are training our students to CAAHEP standards and that makes our students the most in demand group of graduates in our area." - Holly Elliott, RMA, Program Chair, Medical Assistant Certificate Program, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College
"CAAHEP accreditation gives credibility to our program and the profession of clinical exercise physiology." - Samuel Headley, PhD, Professor, Exercise Science & Sport Studies, Springfield College, Springfield, MA
"I am a firm believer in program accreditation, and believe CAAHEP has done a wonderful job in setting standards that improve the educational process. I was CONVINCED my program was good before accreditation, but didn't have a means of proving it. Going through the self-study(ies), the site visit(s), and the review process I have been able to identify and correct our program’s weaknesses.... The entire process has allowed me to create a program that can stand toe to toe with any other program in the country as an equal. I understand some people take accreditation as a necessary evil - demanded by their institution or their industry - but to me it is a day-to-day challenge of what can I do better to improve my program in the future." - Jeff McDonald, Program Director, Emergency Medical Services - Paramedic, Tarrant Community College, Hurst, TX
"CAAHEP accreditation allows our graduates to sit for their credentialing exam immediately after finishing their program, which is advantageous to their employment pursuit.  In addition, the employer knows that they are getting the best of the best when hiring a graduate from a CAAHEP accredited program." - Ibrahim Daoud, BS, RPSGT, Polysomnography Program Director, Central Florida Institute
"Accreditation offers assurance to our students and our community that our program is the highest quality program that will best prepare students to be entry level medical assistants. And - most importantly - it allows our students to be able to sit for the CMA exam." - Dee Kinney, MA, RD, CMA (AAMA), Program Director - Medical Assisting, University of Cincinnati - Clermont College
